Greetings alleged earthlings. Thanks for stopping by. Feel free to say hello. My goal is to document the relationship between the mundane, the sacred and the profane. In my experience, all three are threaded together, because everything is connected; that is, everything affects everything, to varying degrees by direct and indirect means.
For this reason, you won't see lots of fancy editing here, or lots of layered images, although I have used filters on occasion. Photos that employ the use of filters are named as such. As much as my eyes are filters, as are yours, I intend to show the world as it is and prefer transparency in my approach. This website then, is part documentation, part authentic and compassionate attempt at waking us up to reality, and part creative vision. I tend to focus on human relationships with their environment, which I don’t always see as productive. I see humans not as masters of nature, but nature as master of humans, eventually, although it often looks like a wrestling match, strewn with lots of chaos and detritus. Therefore, humans must work with nature in order to thrive, and over the long arc of time, to survive. To that end, there are photos here that substantiate the reality of decay and transience. Not the most uplifting of ideas, I know.
This may make some uncomfortable, but be of good cheer, I also have a sense of humor, and hope you see that levity in some of the photos. There is a folly to our illusion of control. A large part of the conversation I am attempting to create, even if it is only in the mind of the viewer, or my own for that matter, is to be grateful for our existence and experiences, because they are fleeting. The world is often a wondrous and awe inspiring place, and often distressing and maddening, fearful and saddening. Given all of this, it often takes a mass of courage, and a balance of discernment and forgiveness to keep ourselves rooted.
Please do not look away, or be resigned to despair, for there is great lightness in the connection of existence, and we embody a social covenant of mutual tolerance for that which is unlike us. Not only are we steeped in it, we depend on an otherness to exist. Think about the relationship of oxygen and carbon dioxide and how both interact with the human ecosystem. Our human ancestors and the ancestors of every living thing on this planet - meaning everything on this planet, because everything is alive – lived under this covenant as well. We owe it to them, and to the future living beings to continue taking care of each other and the living planet we inhabit. I urge you not to disgrace their efforts by being less than the alleged earthling that you are.
